The incident began just before dawn on Tuesday when fire crews were called to the ExxonMobil refinery in Beaumont. It was not immediately clear what was on fire, but onsite responders were able to extinguish the blaze.

Photos and videos taken from a distance showed flames and a plume of black smoke billowing into the air. The fire was noticeably smaller a short time later. It was not immediately known what may have caused the fire.

Shortly after the fire, the refinery issued a voluntary shelter in place for the surrounding area, but it was lifted at 7:39 a.m. "Initial air monitor readings are below detectable limits," the Southeast Texas Alerting Network said, adding that there were no injuries.

ExxonMobil Beaumont is a 365,000 barrel per day crude oil refinery. It has experienced several incidents over the past decade, including a fire in April 2013 that injured 12 workers. A power outage in January 2016 forced flaring at the refinery, causing huge plumes of black smoke.
