‘Silicon Valley’ star T.J. Miller charged with making false bomb threat
Actor T.J. Miller, who is well known for his role as Erlich on the HBO show “Silicon Valley,” has been charged with making a false bomb threat after he was removed from a train in New York, prosecutors say.
Miller, 36, was arrested at LaGuardia Airport in New York on Monday night and released on Tuesday on a $100,000 bond. He was charged with making a false bomb threat, which carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, Miller was traveling on a train from Washington, D.C. to New York City on the evening of March 18 when he called 911, telling the dispatcher that a female passenger had a bomb in her bag.
By the time Amtrak was notified and mobilized, the train was already in Connecticut, where passengers were told to evacuate. Members of the bomb squad searched the train but nothing suspicious was found.
When an investigator called Miller, who had gotten off the train in New York, the actor explained that the woman was acting as if she wanted to get off and leave her bag behind. “I am worried for everyone on that train. Someone has to check that lady out,” he said.
But when investigators cleared the train, they determined that Miller had actually been traveling on a different train which was about to arrive at the same station. The second train was also stopped but investigators were unable to find anything suspicious.
An Amtrak employee told investigators that Miller appeared intoxicated when he boarded the train, causing him to be removed when they arrived in New York. The employee further explained that Miller had been involved in hostile exchanges with a woman who was sitting in a different row.
Investigators later identified and interviewed the woman, after which they determined that Miller’s claims were not accurate. Instead, they determined that Miller had a grudge against the woman, after which he called 911 to relay false information about a suspected bomb.
If convicted, Miller faces a maximum sentence of up to 5 years in prison.
