5 killed, including NYPD officer and the suspect, in Midtown Manhattan shooting

A NYPD officer and three civilians were killed when a gunman opened fire inside a Manhattan office building, according to city officials. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The attack began at 6:28 p.m. when New York City’s 911 center received multiple calls about an active shooter at 345 Park Avenue, near East 52nd Street, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a briefing.

Surveillance footage shows the suspect exiting a black BMW, registered in Nevada to Tamura, carrying an M4 rifle. He entered the building alone, turned right in the lobby, and immediately opened fire, fatally shooting NYPD Officer Didarul Islam.

A woman who tried to take cover behind a pillar was also shot. The gunman then continues walking through the lobby, “spraying it with gunfire,” according to Commissioner Tisch. He then shot a security guard hiding behind a desk and another man.

The shooter then called an elevator. When a woman exited the elevator in the lobby, he allowed her to pass unharmed before riding up to the 33rd floor, home to Rudin Management. There, he continued firing as he walked the hallway, killing one woman before fatally shooting himself in the chest.

In total, five victims were shot—Officer Islam and four civilians. Four of the five victims, including the officer, were pronounced dead. The surviving victim, a man, is in critical but stable condition at Presbyterian Hospital.

Two of the deceased, a male and a female, were taken to Bellevue Hospital. A fourth civilian victim, a woman, was found dead on the 33rd floor. Four other individuals sustained minor injuries while fleeing the scene.

The building houses offices for several major tenants, including the NFL, Rudin Management, KPMG, and Blackstone.

Commissioner Tisch said Tamura’s vehicle contained additional weapons and ammunition, including a loaded revolver, a rifle case, a backpack, and medication prescribed to him. The NYPD Bomb Squad searched the car and found no explosives.

Tamura is believed to have driven cross-country, with his vehicle recorded traveling through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey in the days before the shooting. He entered New York City on Monday afternoon.

According to law enforcement in Las Vegas, Tamura had a documented mental health history. His motive remains under investigation. Commissioner Tisch confirmed there is no ongoing threat.

Officer Islam, 36, had served on the NYPD for four years. He was married with two sons, and his wife is expecting their third child.

“He was doing the job we asked him to do,” Tisch said. “He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice. Shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city. He died as he lived: a hero.”
