5 Best Family Movies to Watch in Spanish
A lot of times, people turn to movies and music to learn new languages. Not only are they educational, but also entertaining in keeping you engaged on your journey to learn the language. There are a ton of movies you can watch and plenty of streaming platforms like Netflix where you can watch a movie with English or Spanish dub.
When you sit down to watch a movie, don’t let a bad internet connection ruin your movie nights. My Latino wife prefers Spectrum, since they provide great internet and win some more points because of their Spectrum servicio al cliente.
So, here are five of the best movies you can watch with your family to learn Spanish.
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse & Across the Spider-Verse
- The Cuphead Show
- Coco
- The Road to El Dorado
- The Breadwinner
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse & Across the Spider-Verse
Likely, your kids have already seen at least one of the two movies in the Spider-Verse trilogy, so it’s a great time to revisit the movie in its amazing Spanish dub.
The story is about Miles Morales, a young student living in New York who gets the iconic Spider-Man powers after being bit by a radioactive spider.
What makes this movie different from the live-action series is the introduction of the multiverse, where multiple types of Spider-men, Spider-women, and other Spider-creatures happen to come into this dimension from their own dimensions. Together, they team up and try to save the multiverse.
Across the Spider-Verse continues the story where it left off in the previous entry, adding new characters as well as reintroducing old ones.
The third and final part of the series is expected to come out sometime in 2024 or 2025.
The Cuphead Show
This show reminded me of the old animated shows I used to watch as a kid. The characters are fun and quirky, with each one having their personalities. Up to the third season, I didn’t come across a single episode in the series where I felt like I was getting bored.
Every episode of the show follows the misadventures of the risk-taking Cuphead and his cautious brother Mugman. The slapstick humor is a little childish, but to me, that’s the fun of it.
If you’re a gamer then you might have heard of Cuphead, the game on which the show is based. As someone who had played the game before, this was an insanely fun show to watch and it made me play the game again, which made me realize that I’m still extremely bad at 2D platformers.
Coco
Coco is a great Pixar movie to watch in Spanish since the dub uses the Mexican dialect of Spanish to honor the setting of the film. The movie feels like a celebration of Spanish culture and the story is written beautifully.
It’s about Miguel, a young boy from Santa Cecilia in Mexico, who dreams of becoming a musician, just like Ernesto de la Cruz, his idol. During the celebration of the Day of the Dead, Miguel ends up in the Land of the Dead. He then goes on an adventure to get the blessing of his great-great-grandfather to go back home and pursue music.
The journey of Miguel is a heart-warming exploration of the family traditions of Spanish people as well as the power of music to connect people of all types.
Although I’m not Spanish myself, my Latino wife was truly moved by the story and themes of Coco and she connected more deeply with the movie.
The Road to El Dorado
I thought this movie wouldn’t be too exciting to watch. But, boy was I wrong. I had an amazing time watching the movie with my family. The movie’s animation still holds up to this day and the movie has a lot of humor, adventure, drama, and mythology.
The movie is set in 1519 Spain where two friends, Tulio and Miguel win a map to El Dorado, which people say is made of gold. Although most people say it’s just a myth, the two friends decide to sail the seas and find the city of gold.
The songs in this movie are extremely catchy and the characters are lovable. The animation is bright and colorful and is fun to watch for people of all ages.
The Breadwinner
This movie is a hard-hitting story of a little girl, who is forced to earn money to support her helpless family. The movie is based on the children’s novel, written by Deborah Ellis.
It’s about Parvana, a smart and daring 11-year-old girl living in Kabul with her family, who is forced to earn for her family after her father is taken away to prison for no reason. She cuts her hair to pass off as a boy and starts to take odd jobs for money.
The movie, although has some mature themes, is a great watch for your family since it touches upon some important topics. There are a lot of subplots and some twists and turns that are going to keep you and your family hooked till the end.
Wrapping Up
Although movies are a great way to improve your skills in a language, they shouldn’t be the only way you use to learn one. Make sure you watch videos on YouTube take proper Spanish lessons, and then watch movies to hone the skills you’re learning.
