Bus overturns after wedding north of Sydney, at least 10 killed

At least 10 people have been killed and dozens more are injured after a bus accident near Greta in New South Wales, about 125 kilometers north of Sydney, making it one of Australia’s deadliest road accidents in recent decades.
The accident happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when a coach rolled over at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive near the Hunter Expressway off ramp at Greta, a small town about 41 km northwest of Newcastle.
Tracy Chapman, of New South Wales Police, said at least 10 people were confirmed dead and 25 others were taken to area hospitals with varying injuries. She said the death toll could rise, noting that the bus had not yet been fully searched.
The bus was returning from a wedding and was driving to Singleton, northwest of Greta.
The driver of the bus – a 58-year-old man – was taken to hospital under police guard for mandatory testing and assessment. He was later arrested and is expected to face criminal charges.
“There’s sufficient information for us to establish that there will be charges but I won’t go into the detail about those at this time,” Chapman said, without elaborating on the cause of the single-vehicle crash.
A crime scene has been established which will be examined by specialist forensic police and the Crash Investigation Unit.
With at least 10 people confirmed dead, the crash appears to be one of the deadliest road accidents in Australia in recent decades. In 1989, two deadly bus accidents occurred just two months apart, killing 21 and 35 people, respectively.
